Aw, your first paragraph really got to me. It's the perfect description of Remus. (Especially the last three words *pants heavily*)

Yes! Oh yes, I so agree. I am sure Remus, the slinky bastard, uses Sirius' guilt to manipulate him. In a very polite and unobtrusive way, of course.

Sirius is barking mad. I love his intensity, just as I love Severus'. Sirius would drive me mad. But I still love him.

he gets no love. circumstances spit on him at every turn. i can't shake the feeling that lupin would be laughing at him, holding him in contempt on some level, no matter how he acted.

I'm sure that's what Remus does in PoA, when he is deliberately polite and friendly to Severus. He smiles in Snape's face, knowing it drives him mad, but Snape's got no means of getting back for it because Remus doesn't - technically - do anything wrong.
