He came across as very moody and annoyed, but, as you said, it was more the sort of unbalance one gets when trapped with Kreacher in a house full of bad memories with little company and no relief, more than an inherent unbalance. He contributed rational suggestions and advice.

The thing about looking for James in Harry is always there, but it would't have struck me as particularly obvious if it hadn't been pointed out by other characters and discussed in the fandom. Since the very first minute Harry gets in touch with the wizarding world, he is constantly compared to his father. "Yeh look a lot like yer dad, but yeh've got yer mum's eyes," Hagrid in PS/SS. Snape doesn't really bother to find out about Harry, he pegs him down as James the Second straightaway. Then, "Your father would have been proud. (...) He was an excellent Quidditch player himself," McGonagall in PS/SS. And these are only three of dozens of examples. Sirius doesn't do any more than any other adult who knew Harry's parents.

As to Sirius showing concern for Harry: He was the only adult who wanted to give Harry information and who took Harry's wish seriously to be allowed to interact. Possibly because he knew what it was like to not be allowed to.

Remus backed him up to a degree, but I couldn't be sure that Remus would have ever said anything, if Sirius didn't. From my impression of him... probably not.

I don't think so, either. I think Remus is too hesitant to make the first step, because suggesting to give Harry information would make him responsible for what Harry would do with the information.
