Silencio is used to mute a voice, as was pointed out.

How could they cast it on each other though - unless they do it simultaneously - because if one is silenced, he can't cast the charm on the other. And would they bounce off each other and hit something else if cast simultaneously? (Hermione and Goyle was it? - being hit with Harry and Draco's curses in GoF) Which brings up the next point - it would be impossible to 'uncast' it as well since they can't speak!

In the D/s scenario, that kind of moots the point of a safe word, don't you think? (Not having any experience with gags, I have no idea how that would work there either... O_o )

I see someone mentioned the Imperturbable charm - If it didn't block out sound, too, the kids should have been able to at least hear murmurs coming from behind the door that the extendible ears would have picked up. I can't see that Order meetings would be conducted in whispers, and you have to think that there were likely arguments from people - like Sirius - when decisions were made that they didn't like. They may all be on the same side, but few are concilatory by nature.

Of course if silencing spells in general were so common, you'd think they'd be used more often. Perhaps they're NEWT level. I personally don't like capitalizing Silencing Spell/Charm, because that implies that there's only the one. And in the case of smut, a Silencio isn't going to stop the bed from rocking or the springs from squeaking!
