HBP & A Scots Fetish

The two items in the subject line are unrelated. But: I've finally watched HBP and have remained quite unimpressed. So unimpressed, in fact, that all I've got to say doesn't even merit a spoiler cut: Tom Felton looked as though he came from a different - and much better - film, which would have been much more interesting to watch. The rest? A random sequence of scenes that didn't make much sense to anyone who hasn't read the books* and that the film makers apparently wanted to see on screen.

I have also watched "Torchwood - Children of Earth" and was rather more impressed. So this is what Torchwood could have been like from the very start, had they focused on thrill and drama rather than on fooling around with silly CGI monsters and innuendo in every other episode. Also, I crushed mightily on John Frobisher from start to finish, and since I already crushed on the actor in "In the Loop", I've got to seriously wonder where my weird Scots fetish comes from: David Tennant, James McAvoy, Ewan McGregor are all a given, and now there's also Peter Capaldi; and of course the ladies: Michelle Gomez, the ever-fabulous Kelly Macdonald, and, as I've recently watched "This Life", the just as fabulous Daniela Nardini. It's not primarily the accent, because I was indifferent to the Scottish accent until I started to realise that, whenever a Scot is part of the cast, he or she soon becomes my favourite character. Hmm...

*I saw the film with a friend who read the book when it was released, but she's so not a fan that she didn't even remember who the Half-Blood Prince was, so she served as my point of reference.

Another fan!

I take it you've seen "The Thick of It", too (In the Loop's "prequel")? That's where my Malcolm Tucker Peter Capaldi crush started. I heard they're in the process of writing a new series.

Yay, another fan! *waves PC flag*

I haven't, actually, but I am currently in the process of, um, acquiring it. I bet he loved playing Malcolm Tucker, he's fabulous.

I just can't ever get myself interested enough to see the HP films, but I'm really happy to hear that about Tom Felton and his storyline because that's just my impression of HBP (the story) in general.

Yeah, HBP is Draco's story, and I really loved how JKR made me care for Draco in the novel without changing his character. The film was so bland, there was no build-up and no climax, and whenever Draco appeared on screen, I wanted to follow him instead Harry & Co.

I agree about the HBP movie. I mean, I really liked many things about it, but it did feel more like an illustration of the book rather than a movie that stands on its own. It didn't tell a coherent story, it was just filled with scenes that were there just because they were in the book. And it relies way too much on people either having read the books or remembering everything about the previous movies. You really shouldn't be expected to already know the story in order to understand the movie. It's a shame, I thought the movie was visually beautiful and it had a lot of potential - with a decent scriptwriter it might have been really good.

Sorry for the late reply!

Every new HP movie that comes out strengthens my conviction that what the script writers should be doing is writing a HP TV series. I do like the individual scenes of Hogwarts life, and I could totally get into the spirit of things, were they not so chopped and completely random.

Plus, HBP lacked a proper dramatic arc; it sort of fizzled out.
