I'll lick you till you can't stand up

I am re-reading Tom Sawyer for scribbulus_ink's Classic Canon Challenge. "Finally, Tom said: 'I can lick you.' [...] 'I dare you to step over that, and I'll lick you till you can't stand up.'"

I so want to include it in my fic. I really do.

Before I can do that, however, I want to finish my Remus/Bill fic. I popped into my head all finished, structure, title and such, and all I need to do is write it down. Doing quite well, too; the rough draft is written, all that's left is the porn bit. I am not, as yet, sure whether I should make that bit really, really elaborate or not. I was planning on going into detail. Should I change my mind, I wonder?

Bill is not amused, though. I wrote the, ah, climactic dialogue two nights ago and realised that I had Bill go through all this before, when I paired him up with Sirius. He is rather tired of having to shag emotionally repressed men who don't see his worth. Oh well.



I quite like the idea of Bill/Remus. A characterisation aspect of Remus that I feel gets rather ignored, is his sense of humour. Canon!Remus actually smiles a lot. I picture him as being privately amused about things that are going on and the humour of which he is able to see, while others are too wound-up to notice it. (That's one reason, by the way, why I can't see Remus/Hermione. Hermione is not randomly amused. Hermione is scandalised about things Remus wouldn't think so much as worth frowning at.)

Bill, also, has got a sense of humour. He fools around with his brothers, he jokes in the face of Evil ("But Dumbledore says he doesn't care what they do as long as they don't take him off the Chocolate Frog Cards." OotP), and, first and foremost, he seems to be pretty cool about his parents reprimanding him at all possible occasions. In the narrative presence, Bill is in his late twenties, but he still allows his mother to go on about his hair (and earring and clothes and whatnot) and his father to tell him off in front of the Order and the children. Seeing as nothing about Bill indicates that he is too downtrodden to speak up and defend himself (or tell his parents to shut up), I assume he merely smiles and shrugs at their words and goes on about his own business. Pretty much like Remus does, in other respects. I can so picture them sitting at the Order meeting, catching each other's eye and exchanging a fleeting smile at the absurdity of it all.

I can also see Bill flirt with people simply for the fun of it. And I can definitely see Remus being, yes, amused about Bill's flirting with him and tempted to check out how far he can take it. *gets all excited*

I should go back to writing the fic, shouldn't I?

No problem at all :-) You see, this entire post was somewhat inspired by your recent post on Bill, on which I intended to comment but didn't manage to due to RL stuff, so I fully understand your position *g*

This is very true. But I sort of started to see young Sirius as tinted by depressions* already and, of course, driven by aggressions. Bill, I see as quite normal. His growing-up was far less painful than Sirius' and his behaviour as an adult shows that he is a clear-thinking, responsible person.

Which kind of makes me think that he sits back and lets people assume whatever they'd like about him without ever really feeling the need to correct them if they totally get it wrong.

Yes. Exactly. I so think that Bill is very laid-back and relaxed about things. He knows his own worth and he leaves it to others to find out about it. And if they don't - well, as far as he's concerned, it's their loss.

Which would make him a lot like Lupin, except they're kind of mirror images then.

I was going to say, in my original post, that Bill is what Remus could have been, in a way - without the werewolf-thing and the tragedy of his past. Canon!Remus doesn't seem too concerned about people knowing that he's a werewolf, not on a personal level. He probably prefers it to be kept a secret for job reasons, but in interaction with others, he doesn't go all angsty about it. - To draw a parallel to Bill, who seems rather confident about himself, too.

Of course, Remus calm demeanour and Bill's laid-back attitude are both personae they have assumed. But - and that's a general assumption of mine - people always assume a public persona, and it is always rooted in the person's character and abilities. No-one displays attributes and shows a behaviour that is completely unfounded in the original character.

Bill's almost like someone who once upon a time did some rebeling, grew out of it, but forgot to change his wardrobe to reflect the new found maturity.

I wonder how much rebelling Bill really did. He doesn't strike me as the rebel type par excellence. He lacks the fierce conviction and the anger (cf. Sirius) that makes out the 'real' rebel. I think, part of it is to piss off his mother, and part because he finds those clothes really cool.

*As far as I know, teenagers suffering from depressions behave in an overly aggressive and violent manner. They're not, for lack of a better word, melancholy. This would also go for Harry.
