Urgent translation issue!

Can anyone help me with agricultural technology here? Rosina maybe?

How do you call the crop huddles you get after harvesting a field, when you bind the crops (wheat or whatever) together so that they form conic shapes? "Crop huddles" just doesn't sound quite right.

Stook, n. (Agric.) A small collection of sheaves set up in the field; a shock; in England, twelve sheaves.

None the wiser?

Thank you! I came across "shock" through random googling, but I wasn't convinced. Thanks for confirming it. The problem was, the term I had to work with in the source language is somewhat archaic, which makes the search quite difficult. But now I'm sorted.

I think haystack? Or maybe a sheaf? (as in a sheaf of corn?)

Aye, them were the days! Now it all just gets sucked up by the Combine Harvesters...

Sheaves, sheaves, sheaves!

The painting's from 1907, looong before Combine Harvesters.

I am now doomed to spend the entire workday humming "Bringin' in the sheaves, bringin' in the sheaves, we shall come rejoicing..."
But at least you have your word ;).

[identity profile] donnaimmaculata.livejournal.com 2005-01-27 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
At least you spent your workday humming. Some people are doomed to spend it cursing. Or working.

And I learned a new word. Which is also a good thing.

[identity profile] musigneus.livejournal.com 2005-01-27 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, humming. And working. Luckily I have no co-workers in earshot or they would have spent the day cursing, as I cannot carry a tune in the proverbial bucket.

Out of sheer hopefulness: are you still thinking about the Snape/Lupin fic you mentioned working on a while back? (Interest only, no pressure intended.)

[identity profile] donnaimmaculata.livejournal.com 2005-01-28 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I cannot carry a tune to save my life, either. Oh well.

The Snape/Lupin fic, eh? I've been working on one for over a year now - 'working' being used very loosely. It's sitting on my harddrive and is not forgotten. I hope I can finish it before the release of HBP, because I fear that it's Remus' turn to die, which would make the fic AU. And thanks for your interest :-)

[identity profile] musigneus.livejournal.com 2005-01-29 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad it's not forgotten ;). I have some fears for Remus too; I was enthusiastic when the release of HBP was first announced, but I've become rather fearful.

I am convinced he won't make it alive through the series. The only thing I hope for is that he dies somewhere at the end of the last book. But someone important is bound to die in HBP, and Remus doesn't seem to fulfil any important functions any longer :-(

But we will still have fanfic!
