As I said in the original post, OotP didn't irritate me quite as much. I think it's because OotP has this unfinished, part-of-series feel to it, and the characters are frustrated throughout it, too. GoF, OTOH, supposedly works as a stand-alone novel, with a clear exposition, a logically evolving plot and a conclusion. No, my explanation doesn't make much sense; but this is how I feel about the books anyway.
