Apparently, some people find the noise pollution during the World Cup in South Africa annoying. I had to endure a radio interview with a pompous German guy who has launched an anti-vuvuzela petition on my way to work.

Guess what? For someone like me, who does not care about football one bit and who would even go so far as to say "dislike", this is what football always sounds like. Hundreds of people making a lot of noise. It really doesn't make a difference whether it's them shouting, chanting, rattling, whistling, vuvuzeling or throwing up under my bedroom window on their way back from a match.

My attitude is precisely what Germans coined the beautiful phrase "Schadenfreude" for.

There have been 545 complaints to the BBC about the noise of the vuvuzelas. It's kind of mind boggling really that that many people care that much, and that they think there's a sensible way to stop it!

The German petition guy expressed his disappointment of not having been able to put a stop to it prior to the World Cup. I had no idea that it was such a big issue!

I should use it more often!

Oh you South African hooligans! Why can't you stick to our proud football traditions of rampaging through the streets and beating each other up?

I actually have to disagree. I don't care about football, I haven't watched and won't watch a single game, but those things annoy the ever-living fuck out of me. The sound is horrible. (And yet I will for some unknown reason refrain from strangling anyone in the neighbourhood who insists on using those things.)

I... hadn't really noticed them until they exploded all over the media! The visuals are much more ubiquitous and annoying: German flag-pattern gimmicks everywhere.

This morning, I saw a wizened old lady with a German flag-pattern shopping bag. That was quite great, actually.

And it's good to know there are still some people out there who Don't Care! *waves tiny "ignoring football" flag*

Speaking as someone who had to suffer through the European Football Championship happening practically under my window two years ago... WORD. And I don't even dislike football ;-)

I really don't understand how the vuvuzelas are supposed to he worse than these things:

Heh. One of my colleagues brought in a megaphone that not only magnifies his already impressive voice, but also plays cheers (in Dutch). And, of course, when NL played Denmark our entire work cantine was turned into a pub-without-beer for 3 hours *sigh*.

I don't know why I'm using this icon, really, except I think letting loose a team of Dalek Power Rangers on a crowd of rowdy Dutch football fans would be terribly entertaining.

This truly is a thing of beauty. It's like something out of the Potterverse!

I don't know what noise-making devices fans in other countries have been using, but Germany has its own very special Fußballhupen:

They come with refill bottles, so whatever the underlying mechanism is, it's definitely SRS BZNS! Much better than the South African voodoo nonsense, obvsly.

Apparently, they are banned in some stadiums. But, y'know, I've definitely heard them around.
