I think you have to be really single-mindedly obsessed to get a PhD, which is why I will never get it, as I've got the attention span of a four-months-old kitty.
One of my philosophy professors at the uni has been delaying his retirement for years now. He is known to open his lectures snarling: "I want you to know that my staying here is an act of defiance. Hate is a powerful driving force!"
An ex-flatmate of mine studied maths, and we used to discuss whether philosophy of maths PhDs were the maddest. (Psychology doesn't count; insanity is practically a job requirement there.)
