So, I've been fandom-hopping lately, never staying long enough to get involved with a new fandom and only checking them out superficially. And so I don't have much to say with profound fannish contents and instead I've made some screencaps. They are brought to you by a realisation that had dawned after I've been watching Life on Mars. A trend has been developing that is as unexpected as it is alarming: I realised that I found Gene Hunt quite irresistible. - An, to use Sam's famous quote, "overweight, over-the-hill, nicotine-stained, borderline alcoholic homophobe with a superiority complex and an unhealthy obsession with male bonding" - and that despite the fact that I've always thought I like the skinny, fragile artsy types. And then I realised that it had happened before, when I was watching Blackpool, where the sleazy, sexist homophobe Ripley Holden quite managed to charm me. It wasn't much of a stretch to draw the parallels, and to illustrate my point, I've made screencaps of the relevant scenes. The post is quite picture-heavy (30+), but it's got some nakedness and chest-touching as redeeming features.

~ Both series begin with some sort of backstory to introduce the characters ~

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

...but my interest peaks when the dark-haired skinny guy, dressed in casual, strangely anachronistic, disturbingly hot clothes, bursts into another man's territory...

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

...and immediately acts as though he owns the place.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Gene's pissed off.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

So's Ripley.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Nevertheless, Gene makes the first move.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Ripley's quite pushy, too.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

But apart from that little anger management problem, Gene's really very cool.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

However, it's Ripley who wears the best shirts of the lot. And sunglasses. Ripley: cooler > everyone.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Even his tan coat is slightly cooler than...

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Gene's tan coat. (It was really quite difficult to get a good shot of Gene without Ray hanging around in the background. Gene/Ray OTP?)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Ah, but then: Gene's trunks are the best thing ever. And the camera did linger lovingly on them. *insert your own "tickled open a few doors" joke*

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Ripley's trunks are more subdued, and there is no full frontal of them, either.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The trunks are rather cooler than the grandfatherly vest Sam's wearing, though.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Peter also likes white underwear. Hidden symbolism? Subtle characterisation via underwear colour? Discuss.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Ripley's got a son who's very, very cute.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Gene's got a son substitute who's very, very cute.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The boys both get into a spot of trouble with the police...

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

...who's very understanding and supportive and hot.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

There's also a cute-ish brunette who serves to propell a bit of a het romance.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

But as she's too nice and harmless, this subplot holds no interest for me.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Well, not absolutely no interest...

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Sam and Peter both make their women gain confidence and self-assurance. Which they probably manage by being a good shag.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Not that there's ever been any doubt about that.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Just make sure your bed's got a stable headboard.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

"I'm good with wives" says Peter and immediately proceeds to prove his point by seducing his main suspect's wife. The dirty little perv.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Sam doesn't make as many words about this particular talent of his, but he proves it nevertheless by getting his own mother completely smitten and flustered. The dirtier little perv.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Bored with all this wife action, Peter goes to talk to whores.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Sam beats him in this category by inviting a whore home for the purpose of having kinky sex on drugs with her. He's adjusting to the 1973 way of policing rather well.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

But mostly, the guys just hang out with the gang.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Peter isn't allowed in the gang, as he shags the alpha's wife :-(

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

"Here comes Mary, Queen of Scots". - Despite being pissed off with Peter, Ripley still shows his affection by giving him cute nicknames (including "Braveheart" and "Jack of the Ages" (actually, I've no idea whether this really is the phrase he used, as I've got trouble understanding Ripley at times))

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

"Do I still get my wotsits mixed up, Gladys?" Gene proves himself hardly less inventive when it comes to nicknames ("wonder boy", "my little deputy dawg").

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Sam and Gene go to a club where Gene shows that he likes to party wild.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

But Ripley likes to party wilder.

~ And so, after many adventures for the boys, both series end with a wedding for the girls ~

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Where Peter talks to the woman he loves...

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

...and Sam talks to the woman he loves...

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

...and the woman he loves more.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

But then Peter goes to have a beer and a man-to-man conversation with Ripley.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

And Sam goes to the pub with Gene and the gang. And really, who could blame him?

The End.

Ah, see, I am a dedicated viewer. I had to watch both series very carefully, several times in order to form an informed opinion.

Now I want to see Blackpool. *sigh*

But I want to go home and rewatch my LoM DVDs even more.

Happy to entertain.

I <3 Blackpool. It's got a hawt sex scene with karaoke singing in it. And David Tennant is always putting something in his mouth.

In Ray's dreams.

Actually, I've been contemplating that a lot myself lately. I'm surprised there aren't more Gene/Ray stories around.

I have to admit, I like Gene as a person a great deal more than I like Ripley, but by the end of Blackpool I did think Ripley was awesome. I just took a while to warm up to him.

This was wonderfully amusing - thank you!

Ray's dreams: Replacing that scrawny nutter on top of the guv's manhandling list.

It's probably because of the smallness of the fandom. Obscure pairings have a difficult stand. But yeah, Gene/Ray totally makes sense. They actually seem to openly like each other before episode 7.

Gene is made more sympathetic much earlier on, while Ripley remains the sleazy bastard till the very end. I think I really began to like him on second viewing when I already knew how the story would end for him.

I'm happy to entertain.

"Blackpool" is totally worth watching, if only because of the surreal karaoke scenes. And David Tennant is hawt when he's being obnoxious. Glad you liked the caps :-)

I've neither heard of nor seen either series, so this is a little confusing for me, heh.

Anyway, what IS the thing that the one guy is.. holding in his hand? in the "Ah, but then: Gene's trunks are the best thing ever." picture?!?!?! (Oh, ok, the guy = Gene. But whatever, it doesn't answer my question!)

PS: I'm really into Elbow now. Google for Guy Garvey. (This is my way of saying.. "I think I understand you (in a way)." - I've never actually thought about 'how I feel about him', but uhh, I do know I don't find him entirely unattractive [anymore]. ...)

Ah, I am totally catching up on BBC series at present (hence the aforementioned fandom hopping).

Ahaha! I can see what you mean. I needs a fresh and unspoiled eye to see what you saw, I suppose, because everyone who watched the show knows that Gene's is in the process of arresting and is holding a guy down, twisting his arm behind his back. The "thing" is the arestee's hand.

Brilliant. Thank you for this.

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. I am giggling with glee. Though now I do feel an intense urge to go and rewatch my State of Play dvds.

Random piece of information alert: BBC America will be showing the sequel to Blackpool on October 28th. No David Tennant but lots of yummy David Morrissey.

Hello! You don't know me, but i happened to stumble upon this by accident and sweet Lord of mine, you've got it BANG ON!! I am a **HUGE** fan of Blackpool. In fact, quite literally obsessed! And i'm an even **HUGER** fan of LOM. I had never noticed the similarities between the two, but agree that in each case, it's the slightly over weight, sexist, homophobe who i find myself attracted to. And those screen caps are brilliant (*saves close up of the Gene Genie's tidy little package*). Is it wrong for a stranger to love another stranger? Ah well, i love you for this blog. It's easily the most interesting thing i've found on the t'internet for months! I wouldn't normally do this, but if you fancy a chat about Genie and *those* trunks, drop me a message - tigerbaby_1984@hotmail.co.uk

Love this "thread"! I am new to LJ too and also stumbled on this. Am already LOM and David Morrissey fan but now considering getting Blackpool DVD to catch up. (D. Tennant ain't bad either). However while ogling, er, examing the "trunks" shot, I couldn't help noticing one or two things, and have posted an entry re:this in my LJ. . . .

Oh, BTW, do you mind if I friend you?

Have you seen Holding On? I don't think this was ever repeated but have just got the DVD purely on the strength that I remember seeing David Morrisey in the buff. Oh, and the series was very good too.

You're most welcome to friend. However, I must warn you: I'm absent from LJ a lot. I might occasionally pop up to post or comment, but I'm not around on a regular basis. I feel like a cheat when someone friends me in the expectation of entertainment, which I then fail to provide.)

I've never seen Holding On, no. The only other show with David Morrissey I've ever seen was State of Play. - Which, of course, has the added bonus of also having Philip Glenister in it. And other magnificent actors.
