Silencio

So, the Silencing Charm is used in Hogwarts dormitories so that the students can indulge in some quiet wanking or shagging. But is that canon? I don't remember that sort of Silencing Charm existing in the books. (Also, I am not a great fan of it. If drowning out any sounds were that simple, Harry could easily prevent Ron from hearing his nightmares, and IIRC this is something he worries about in OotP.) The only Silencing Charm I can think of is the one cast on living creatures (bullfrogs and ravens) in Flitwick's class. Somehow, the idea of Harry and Ron casting Silencing Charms on each other before wanking each other off is oddly appealing. Has anyone ever used it in a fic? (Doesn't have to be Harry and Ron, though.)

I've seen it a couple of times in R/S fic, but not exactly as you're describing...only one partner was silenced. Silencio was used in place of a gag; the fics were (very) mild D/s kink.

Unfortunately, my brain is completely fried because I can't remember what they are called...

oh yes it bloody well does, now that that picture is in my head!

Yes, the 'silencio' spell is thrown around quite a lot, and works well for pwps (I'm almost positive I've used it at some point) but I don't think it's canon used that way.

Yeah, I've invented a *muffling* charm for silencing sound from leaving an area; in canon silencio causes the person not to MAKE sound, not, sound to not escape the (bed).

The Remus/Severus I wrote last week or two weeks ago (?) involved the useof one partner silencing the other. Okay, two weeks: <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/users/florahart/181042.html>Here</a>.

'Silencio' is used to make things silent, like another person, but to like block out sounds the Imperturbable Charm is used, like how Molly Weasley used in 12 Grimmauld Place in OotP to block out any sounds from the meeting so that the children wouldn't listen. I'll show you.

Chapter 4 - 'Number twelve, Grimmauld Place'

"You want to be careful," said Ron, staring at the ear. "If Mum sees one of them again..."
"It's worth the risk, that's a major meeting they're having," said Fred.
The door opened and a long mane of red hair appeared.
"Oh hello, Harry!" said Ron's younger sister, Ginny, brightly. "I thought I heard your voice."
Turning to Fred and George she said, "It's no go with the Extendable Ears, she's gone and put an Imperturbable Charm on the kitchen door."
"How d'you know?" said George, looking crestfallen.
"Tonks told me how to find out," said Ginny. "You just chuck stuff at the door and if it can't make contact the door's been Imperturbed. I've been flicking Dungbombs at it from the top of the stairs and they just soar away from it, so there's no way the Extendable Ears will be able to get under the gap."

From dictionary.com:

imperturbable

adj : not easily perturbed or excited or upset; marked by extreme calm and composure; "hitherto imperturbable, he now showed signs of alarm"; "an imperturbable self-possession"; "unflappable in a crisis" [syn: unflappable]

You can just use that instead of the Silencing Charm, and it makes loads more sense. I always do. ;)

The Silencing Charm was in OotP, they were preforming it on bullfrogs in Charms. I don't know the pages and am not about to go through 700+ pages looking for it, but I know for a fact that it's canon, I read it not a week ago. :)

*wanders in from d_s*

According to the Lexicon, Silencio is used twice in OotP and mentioned in FB. (http://www.hp-lexicon.org/magic/spells_s.html) It seems to be a fifth-year spell.

Silencio is used to mute a voice, as was pointed out.

How could they cast it on each other though - unless they do it simultaneously - because if one is silenced, he can't cast the charm on the other. And would they bounce off each other and hit something else if cast simultaneously? (Hermione and Goyle was it? - being hit with Harry and Draco's curses in GoF) Which brings up the next point - it would be impossible to 'uncast' it as well since they can't speak!

In the D/s scenario, that kind of moots the point of a safe word, don't you think? (Not having any experience with gags, I have no idea how that would work there either... O_o )

I see someone mentioned the Imperturbable charm - If it didn't block out sound, too, the kids should have been able to at least hear murmurs coming from behind the door that the extendible ears would have picked up. I can't see that Order meetings would be conducted in whispers, and you have to think that there were likely arguments from people - like Sirius - when decisions were made that they didn't like. They may all be on the same side, but few are concilatory by nature.

Of course if silencing spells in general were so common, you'd think they'd be used more often. Perhaps they're NEWT level. I personally don't like capitalizing Silencing Spell/Charm, because that implies that there's only the one. And in the case of smut, a Silencio isn't going to stop the bed from rocking or the springs from squeaking!

At last, when the Irish team had left the box to perform another lap of honor on their brooms (Aidan Lynch on the back of Connolly's, clutching hard around his waist and still grinning in a bemused sort of way), Bagman pointed his wand at his throat and muttered, "Quietus."
--Goblet of Fire, chapter 10 (p.116)

Now, that was after his voice had been amplified. What if you were to do that to someone whose voice was at a normal decibel? Would that pretty much silence them?

I have the feeling this is nowhere near what you were looking for.
