I consider fanfiction, to a great degree, as a platform that allows me to lust after some man I fancy. Therefore, I prefer to read fics that are not written from that man's PoV. I want see him through the eyes of others, because, in order to find someone fanciable, I musn't know what's going on inside their heads. I want the mystery. I want to remain an outsider. I want the distance.

Does that make sense to anyone else beside myself?

I can understand, but I'm not like you. I think I'm weirder than you: I'm in love with a pairing, and I can identify myself with both of them.

Ah, see, I don't want to identify myself with the man I crush on. I don't mind identifying myself with his love (or sex) interest (which makes me some subspecies of Mary-Sue, I guess), but that's not mandatory, either. I am perfectly happy just watching them from the shadows. (Which, I guess, makes me a Voyeur!Mary-Sue, liek, OMG!!)

I secretly suspect that this is why I end up pairing Snape with Sirius and Remus so often - because writing from Snape's PoV enables me to drool over them.

On the other hand, Snape doesn't really like them, and he never says anything nice about either of them, so maybe this theory is utter bullshit.

I don't write Harry either way, which might have something to do with the fact that he is the hero of the novels. This means, we already know a lot about him anyway. We are in his head all the time, which, to me, makes him a less appealing character. Just like some people always go for the evil guy, I always go for the supporting cast.

Yes, because otherwise it would be weirdly like fancying yourself. *giggle* And you know, there is a lack of gratuitous description of how gorgeous they are. Unless they're narcissistic, but... again, weirdly like fancying yourself.

Exactly. I want to read about how gorgeous my man is, but he can hardly say so himself. That's why I need the other character to tell me all about it. Gratuitous descriptions of gorgeousness, mmh...

Fic: "I can see my reflection in the mirror as I walk through the room, and DAMN am I fine. My arse is to die for, if I do say so myself, and my EYES. Rawr."

Reader: "O-kay..."

*snerk* First-person can be fun when it's a slash fic, though. If you mainly lust after the other one and identify with the one whose perspective it is.

Yeah, that's true. You just use the *other* man's body to satisfy your deprived lust for the *one* man. Or something.

Or something. So long as it works, I won't think too deeply about it in case it disturbs my enjoyment of pr0n. I mean, can you imagine that? You're reading fic and suddenly you start analysing what your reaction to it says about your pysche. *g*

I want my crush to remain a mystery, like it would be in RL - otherwise it's just too confusing. I want to see him through someone else's eyes (but not in a second person narrative though, I hate that)

Yay for mystery! That's why I hardly ever write from Remus' PoV. I mean, he is enigma personified, so why should I try to make him less so?

*orgasmic* YEEEEEEEEEESSSS!

hum, I'm in serious need of Remus slash. Once I get some time off for good behavior, I'll jump on those like a... like a cannibal who likes seafood in front of a frogmen buffet. That's a lot of craving.

That's a really interesting way to look at it. When I write het I tend to do so from the woman's POV and I think you've pretty much nailed the reason. I never would have realized it before, but it's probably true.

When I write slash it varies because I am usually drooling over both participants. :oD

Reading is different. I'll read it if I like the pairing or the author. POV doesn't really factor.

Just because a fic is written from my character-of-interest's point of view I do not not read it. And in spite of all what I said about gratuitous descriptions of gorgeousness: It's not necessarily all about the pretty. It's more that I prefer not knowing what my character thinks and feels, because speculating about his motives is what keeps my interest. He can be ugly, as long as he remains an enigma, you know?

Hmm. I think for me it depends on the character, or maybe it depends on the reason I like the character. I like to see Snape from the outside (in fact I have little choice since I can't get very far into his head), but with other characters I often like to see from their POV.

Or maybe it depends on the pairing. If it's more of a sexually motivated relationship I probably want to see from the less-hot one's perspective; if I'm interested in them emotionally I want to look inside both of their heads to see how they go together.

See, I don't really want to be in neither partner's head. I find fiction more appealing if I don't really know what's going on inside them. I especially don't want to have entire thought processes elaborated.

I think a lot of fanficcers feel that way.
Sometimes it is so obvious you can practically see that pool of drool on the writer´s keyboard. *g*
For me, this kind of fic that revels in the physical beauty of one or both parts of a pairing is almost a genre by itself. I call it drool-fic.
You know, these stories that make you smile indulgently and think "Have it bad, eh?" :-)

By sheer coincidence I came upon such a story shortly after I read your entry, a Highlander rec on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, an AU featuring Duncan McLeod as a waterhorse, a shapeshifter who takes the form of a magnificent stallion (oh, subtle!) one moment and turns into a gorgeous human male the next - a gloriously naked male, I should add.
Should this in any way remind you of Pratchett´s Greebo, don´t worry: no similarity whatsoever!
The moment when Methos turns and sees the creature in its human form for the first time is drool-fic par excellence!
Not that I dislike it, I quite enjoy it once in a while, but as I said: it makes me smile a bit. :-)
It´s the female equivalent to a bunch of males admiring Pamela Anderson´s boobs. Only women do it so much more elegantly and inventively than the average male.
That´s another reason why I love fanfic!

I call it drool-fic.

Excellent name!

I know I wrote Genesis to shamelessly drool over Remus. Blatant admiration can be quite entertaining.

But maybe I should elaborate: I'm not necessarily after detailed descriptions of pretty body parts (though this, too, can be a good thing). What I want is to see the character I'm mainly interested in through the eyes on an outsider. I don't want to know what the character thinks and feels, I want to have to guess. That's the way to keep my interest. (In fanfic as well as in RL, if it comes to that.)

I couldn't agree more. Some characters I just cannot write because I want to be looking at them, dammit! And you want the other characters to appreciate their beauty and general wondrousness. Like you writing Snape/Remus. Although Snape doesn't like him, he can't help but be attracted to him and appreciate him because he (Remus) ROCKS! We already appreciate/want to shag/love him, but watching/writing the realisation dawn on someone else is great. Like we're nudging their elbow going 'look at that though! Look at his throat when he drinks! Don't tell me you don't like that...'

When Remus is being all mysterious and stuff, we don't want to know that he's thinking 'these underpants were a bad choice. I've totally got a wedgie.' Do we?

Your icon cracks me up. Every. Goddamn. Time.

'look at that though! Look at his throat when he drinks! Don't tell me you don't like that...'

Heh! Exactly.

Even though Remus was the character who drew me in into HP in the first place, it took me very long to be able to write from his PoV. I want him to be mysterious and I definitely don't want to know about his bad underwear choice. (There are sources, though, who claim that Remus doesn't wear underwear anyway.)

From: [identity profile] rosina-alcona.livejournal.com
Oh my god, of course he doesn't wear underwear! How could I be so stupid. He couldn't be all feral and grrr with a pair of tightie whities on.

How come it was Remus that drew you in? The werewolf thing, or the mystery or teh hawt?

I'm becoming addicted to an RPG with Remus just now. And they keep using Jamie Bamber icons which is doubling my pleasure.

Because he's nice. I like nice men.

Seriously, though, I liked Remus from the start; the way he spoke and acted with that quiet authority, his polite and secretly amused way of insulting Snape, and when he turned out to be a werewolf, I was lost. The tragedy, oh the tragedy and drama and darkness behind the calm facade! All feral and grrr indeed *fans self*

Are you watching or playing in the RPG? And who's Jamie Bamber?

Date: 2004-09-23 07:09 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rosina-alcona.livejournal.com
Yes, he is nice, isn't he, despite the loneliness and the secrecy and the goddamn bad luck of it all. He could be bitter, but he's not. And he has that dependable calm thing going on. The marauders would have disintegrated without him - the one you don't notice till he's gone.

And I love the bit in OotP when Harry is asking him and Sirius about Snape's worst memory and he is all 'I should have done a better job controlling my friends' etc which makes me want to cry every time I read it! *sniffles*

The rpg is [livejournal.com profile] the_leaky. I'm watching, because I'm not online often enough to rp and people would be hovering on the brinks of orgasms for hours and it wouldn't be fair. Jamie Bamber played Archie Kennedy (icon!) in Hornblower and I adore him.
